FLAVOUR OF THE YEAR 2023
A peculiarity of Gelato Day is the Flavour of the Year, chosen each edition by one of the participating countries – with the exception of last year's tenth anniversary when the recipe for the Taste of the Year, "Dolce Sinfonia", was decided by the special competition between European ice cream makers organized by Artglace in collaboration with Longarone Fiere Dolomiti and Italian Exhibition Group (IEG). Thus, after the "Mantecado" chosen by Spain in 2021, for the European Artisan Gelato Day 2023 the Flavor of the Year will be "Apfelstrudel", selected by Austria: it is a white-based ice cream to which apple pulp is added, flavored with rum and lemon oil. The other ingredients that characterize "Apfelstrudel" and that cannot be missing are a sprinkling of cinnamon, sultanas, preferably dark, and finally breadcrumbs. It will therefore be the ancient and beloved strudel, a real tribute to a sweet symbol of Austria and appreciated far beyond its borders, the undisputed taste of 2023, which on March 24 will be offered in all ice cream parlors participating in the Day, in the "original" version according to the official recipe or creatively revisited by master ice cream makers in every part of Europe using ingredients and inspirations from their territory.

"After two years of restrictions, 2022, also thanks to the mild temperatures that lasted for much of the autumn, was a very important year for the recovery of the entire artisanal ice cream supply chain. But, between the war in Ukraine and the heavy increases in energy and raw material prices, 2022 is also a year marked by new difficulties, in the face of which, however, our master ice cream makers continue to demonstrate great resilience and an inexhaustible desire to do and test themselves –Comment Domenico Belmonte, president of Artglace. – This is why we look to 2023 with optimism, raising the curtain on a new edition of the European Artisan Gelato Day and inviting all gelato makers in Europe to join us in promoting and celebrating, united as always, all the quality of artisanal gelato."
